Here’s an overview of what to expect:
CLINIC SCHEDULE is June 9th - 13th, 9:00am-12:00pm daily. Clinic check-in on Monday begins at 8:30 am in the Sanctuary. Each day consists of a Ruth devotional, a chamber ensemble class, a snack break, and two elective enrichment classes. Parents are especially welcomed for our opening Ruth Devotional from 9:00-9:15, Monday-Thursday, however parents are not required to attend. Please note our slightly different schedule on Thursday with an extra performance opportunity in the afternoon. This concert will be a different program than the Friday final recital. Students should pack a sack lunch to eat outside, picnic-style, at 12:00 pm as soon as Clinic ends for the day. Then, we will enchant you with a performance at 1:00 pm. Parents are invited to come at 12:00pm, bring a lunch as well, and stay for the concert. On Friday, our final recital will be held at 11:00am and is open to family and friends.

TYPES OF CLASS EXPERIENCE:
Each student will have a Chamber Ensemble class and two Elective Enrichment classes.
Placement in Chamber groups will be decided by instructors and based on instrument and appropriate level. Special note to pianists: we will try to place as many pianists in string groups as possible.
Placement in Elective Enrichment classes will be decided taking into account your completed preference form (you will receive the form after you complete registration). There is no guarantee you will get placed into your top choices, but we will do our best to accommodate the requests of all participants.
Music will be sent in advance to prepare ahead of time before the start of the Clinic.
SNACK BREAK & FELLOWSHIP TIME:
It is our hope that students will embrace an atmosphere of camaraderie at our clinic. Snacks and water will be provided every day. However, special dietary needs may not be able to be accommodated. Please contact us if you have questions, or be prepared to bring your own snack if necessary.
ENRICHMENT ELECTIVE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Bucket Drums*:
The Bucket Drum Class puts rhythm in action! Using sticks on 5 gallon buckets, students will learn concepts of keeping a steady beat, learning basic and complex rhythm patterns, and the reward of playing a percussion piece as an ensemble. Taught by AJ Salmon.
No advance preparation required.
Cello Choir*:
The cello is a singing instrument! Come and enjoy melody and harmony as we put our ‘cello voices’ together to make beautiful music. Taught by Charlotte Muir.
Requires students to prepare selected music in advance of camp participation.
Fiddle*:
Did you know that the fiddle and the violin are really the same instrument? Learn how to lose your classical “accent” and pick up a southern drawl in your playing. Come ready to learn fiddle tunes by ear and the techniques needed to turn your instrument into a fiddle!

Hand Chimes*:
Anyone can play them, but you will be challenged to think vertically (harmony) and horizontally (melody) while cooperating with our chime choir to create beautiful ringing music! Must be able to sight read rhythms with whole, dotted-half, half, and quarter notes. Taught by Melissa Beutel.
No advance preparation required.
Intermediate Guitar*:
This course is for those who already own a guitar and have the basics mastered such as basic scales and chords. Must bring your own guitar. Taught by Brandon Mooberry.
Covered in this week long course will be:
● Chord progressions to popular worship songs.
● Strumming patterns.
● Soloing on guitar.
● Finger picking.
No advance preparation required.
Movie Music Extra Ensemble*:
Do you want more ensemble experience in addition to your chamber group? Ensembles will be formed based on instrument and appropriate level. You may find yourself playing with a group of like or mixed instruments.
Requires students to prepare selected music in advance of camp participation.
Beginner Composition Class-In this class, students will learn the basics of music composition by crafting melodies, adding harmonic progressions, understanding basic forms, and experimenting on various notation/composition software platforms. By the end of this session, each student will have composed a short piece (30-60 seconds) for 2 instruments. Taught by Dave Getz.
No advance preparation required. Involves some homework outside of class during the week of clinic.
Beginning Guitar:
This course is for those who are curious about starting to play the guitar. There are no prerequisites and guitars will be provided. Taught by Brandon Mooberry
Covered in this week long course will be:
● Major Scales
● Minor Scales
● Basic Chords- G, C, D, E minor
● Songs that include the 4 basic chords

"Composer as Entrepreneur" Class-In this class, students with prior composition experience will be taught how to take their music "into the world!" While the internet offers many opportunities, it is sometimes daunting to know where to begin. This class will explore how to cultivate a receptive environment for your music in your local community. Students will gain skills in post-production, editing, marketing, and self-promotion. By the end of this session, students will have made resources that will enable their music to be heard by a local and global audience. Taught by Dave Getz.

Improvisation for Strings:
Exploring how your instrument is an extension of yourself to communicate- This class will briefly cover baroque embellishments, classical cadenzas, and Jazz improv. Class suggested for intermediate and/or advanced players. Taught by Katie Roy.

Instruments of Worship:
Did you know YOU can be an instrument of worship? Being a Christian in the classical music world is a very special opportunity. We get to worship the Lord with our instruments but also our lives as we navigate the unique circumstances we find ourselves in as classical musicians! Have you ever wondered what Truths from the Bible can encourage you in your performance anxiety or when you’re taking an audition? If so, this class will equip you and give you encouragement for those unique circumstances and more!! We will also discuss how you can be a light to your orchestra friends and worship the Lord while playing classical music, not just worship songs! Taught by Casey Rinkenberger.

Composers often express and communicate ideas, emotions and stories through their music.
In this class we will explore a few pieces of instrumental music to learn the stories and narrative portrayed. Taught by Grace Trang.

Sight Reading:
For way too many musicians this is a scary word! This class equips students with a strategic approach to reading and performing new music. Our class will take us on a step by step progression to improve our note reading and therefore our confidence when reading a piece of music for the first time!

Technique:
Violin-Sign up for this class in order to further your skills in both right and left hand technique. Virtuosic topics covered will be bow strokes, chord development, vibrato, double stops and more.
No advance preparation required.
Viola-Develop stronger technique in both left hand and bow hand. We’ll cover strategies for working on vibrato at all levels and practice strategies for fast passages. We’ll also work on a variety of bow strokes as well as techniques for a bigger, richer sound. If applicable, we’ll discuss the major differences in technique between playing violin and playing viola.

Cello-We will be looking at different aspects of cello technique in this class: shifting, vibrato, and sound production are a few of the things we will be working on.

Piano- We will work on playing major and minor chords; primary chord progressions in various keys; developing finger and hand independence; sight reading and harmonization.

Theory Games:
Practice reading notes, rhythms, and musical terms, all while playing games. We’ll be up and moving to practice our skills and work with teammates.

Viola for Violinists:
Playing viola is just like playing violin with a different string and different clef, right? Wrong!:) In our “Viola for Violinists” elective, we’ll discuss how to get started on viola and practice reading alto clef. We’ll also discuss (and put into practice) how a great sound is achieved differently on a viola than a violin. Lastly we’ll talk about a violist’s role in chamber music and how to listen differently in an ensemble. *This class is recommended for high school age, and having a viola is required. If you do not have access to a viola, please consider renting one during the week of HOISMC. Taught by Diane Wuthrich.

Worship Piano:
Have you ever wondered how instrumentalists on a worship team play without traditional sheet music? In this class, we’ll explore piano chord charts and apply basic music theory to create unique and expressive accompaniments for a well-known worship song. We’ll also dive into the life of King David in the Bible, reflecting on how to cultivate a heart of worship. Students should be able to play a C major scale and have experience using the sustain pedal. Taught by Lynnae Kellum.

Have you ever wanted to play in a church worship band? If so, this class is for you! We will learn to play by ear to worship songs in order to develop this valuable skill as a means of glorifying God. No previous worship experience necessary. Students should be proficient in the fundamentals of violin playing as well as knowing the C, G, D, and A Major scales. Taught by Casey Rinkenberger.
