CLINIC SCHEDULE is June 10th - 14th, 9:00am-12:00pm daily. Clinic check-in on Monday begins at 8:30 am in the Sanctuary. Each day consists of a hymn devotional, a chamber ensemble class, a snack break, and two elective enrichment classes. Parents are especially welcomed for our opening Hymn Devotional from 9:00-9:15, Monday-Thursday, however parents are not required to attend. Please note our slightly different schedule on Thursday with an extra performance opportunity in the afternoon. This concert will be a different program than the Friday final recital. Students should pack a sack lunch to eat outside, picnic-style, at 12:00 pm as soon as Clinic ends for the day. Then, we will enchant you with a performance at 1:00 pm. Parents are invited to come at 12:00pm, bring a lunch as well, and stay for the concert. On Friday, our final recital will be held at 11:00am and is open to family and friends.

TYPES OF CLASS EXPERIENCE:
Each student will have a Chamber Ensemble class and two Elective Enrichment classes.
Placement in Chamber groups will be decided by instructors and based on instrument and appropriate level. Special note to pianists: we will try to place as many pianists in string groups as possible.
Placement in Elective Enrichment classes will be decided taking into account your completed preference form (you will receive the form after you complete registration). There is no guarantee you will get placed into your top choices, but we will do our best to accommodate the requests of all participants.
Music will be sent in advance to prepare ahead of time before the start of the Clinic.
SNACK BREAK & FELLOWSHIP TIME:
It is our hope that students will embrace an atmosphere of camaraderie at our clinic. Snacks and water will be provided every day. However, special dietary needs may not be able to be accommodated. Please contact us if you have questions, or be prepared to bring your own snack if necessary.
ENRICHMENT ELECTIVE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Bucket Drums:
The Bucket Drum Class puts rhythm in action! Using sticks on 5 gallon buckets, students will learn concepts of keeping a steady beat, learning basic and complex rhythm patterns, and the reward of playing a percussion piece as an ensemble.
Composition:
Have you ever wondered how composers complete a piece of music? What tools and tricks do they use to go from a blank page to a complete symphony? In this class, we will explore the mysterious art and science that is Music Composition. Through preliminary activities geared for beginners to short writing assignments for those with experience, Mr. Getz will lead you on a creative adventure that will leave you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the music you play.
Extra Ensemble:
Do you want more ensemble experience on top of your chamber group? Ensembles will be formed based on instrument and appropriate level. You may find yourself playing with a group of like or mixed instruments. Music will be sent out ahead of time to practice.
Fiddle:
Did you know that the fiddle and the violin are really the same instrument? Learn how to lose your classical “accent” and pick up a southern drawl in your playing. Come ready to learn fiddle tunes by ear and the techniques needed to turn your instrument into a fiddle!
Great Composers and their Music of Faith:
We'll be looking at the lives and times of several great classical composers and how their musical compositions reflect their Christian faith.
Guitar: At applied guitar studio your instructor, Brandon Mooberry, will work through chord progressions, scales, basic music theory to understand the scales and chord progressions in worship music, strumming patterns, and applying what we have worked on to improve as a worship musician in your church's worship band or to play on your own. You must bring your own guitar for this class.
ILMEA Violin Audition Prep:
Get a jump start on preparing your ILMEA state audition excerpt. Audition scales will also be covered. Fingerings and bowings will be provided for the excerpt. For violinists grades 9-12.
Improvisation:
Mr. Brandon will teach you how to improvise, or compose on the spot, music with friends, classmates, or maybe one day bandmates. We will explore the fun and freedom of making your own music in the moment.
Intro to Orchestra: Students will explore the basic fundamentals of what it takes to be a conductor and good orchestra member! Students will learn basic conducting patterns and have the opportunity to put those skills into practice by conducting the class orchestra! Students will also have the opportunity to sight read new music and learn orchestra etiquette and leadership skills. Although music will be at a easy/early intermediate level, Students will need to have solid note reading skills and confidence to play new music (sight read) each day. Both string players and pianists are welcome!
Masterclass: It’s like a private lesson with a group audience! Gain valuable experience in playing a 2 minute portion of a solo of your choice in front of your peers, while receiving feedback from a professional musician. This is also a growing experience for those listening, as their feedback may be asked for as well. All participants should be willing to play a 2 minute solo of their choosing.
Sight Reading:
For way too many musicians this is a scary word! This class equips students with a strategic approach to reading and performing new music. Our class will take us on a step by step progression to improve our note reading and therefore our confidence when reading a piece of music for the first time!
Technique:
Violin-Sign up for this class in order to further your skills in both right and left hand technique. Virtuosic topics covered will be bow strokes, chord development, vibrato, double stops and more.
Viola-Develop stronger technique in both left hand and bow hand. We’ll cover strategies for working on vibrato at all levels and practice strategies for fast passages. We’ll also work on a variety of bow strokes as well as techniques for a bigger, richer sound. If applicable, we’ll discuss the major differences in technique between playing violin and playing viola.
Cello-We will be looking at different aspects of cello technique in this class: shifting, vibrato, and sound production are a few of the things we will be working on.
Piano- We will work on playing major and minor chords; primary chord progressions in various keys; developing finger and hand independence; sight reading and harmonization.
Theory Games:
Practice reading notes, rhythms, and musical terms, all while playing games. We’ll be up and moving to practice our skills and work with teammates.
Ukulele:
Have you ever wanted to pick up a ukulele to play and sing some of your favorite songs? We will be learning the basic chords for ukulele that will open up the ability to play hundreds of songs at campfires, family gatherings, or just hanging out with friends!
Viola for Violinists:
Playing viola is just like playing violin with a different string and different clef, right? Wrong!:) In our “Viola for Violinists” elective, we’ll discuss how to get started on viola and practice reading alto clef. We’ll also discuss (and put into practice) how a great sound is achieved differently on a viola than a violin. Lastly we’ll talk about a violist’s role in chamber music and how to listen differently in an ensemble. *This class is recommended for high school age, and having a viola is required. If you do not have access to a viola, please consider renting one during the week of HOISMC.
Worship Music:
Piano- Have you ever wondered how instrumentalists on a worship team play without any notes written on staff music? In this class we explain piano chord charts and use basic music theory to come up with unique and creative piano accompaniments to a well-known worship song. Students must be able to play a C major scale and have experience using the sustain pedal.
Strings- Have you ever wanted to play in a church worship band? If so, this class is for you! We will learn to play by ear to worship songs in order to develop this valuable skill as a means of glorifying God. No previous experience is necessary. For any stringed instrument.
